그랑데 카페모카, 휩크림과 시나몬 넣어서
미국 생활 4년 동안 내내 나를 당혹스럽게 만들던 것이 있었다. 처음엔 단순히 언어라고 생각했고, 살아온 환경의 차이라고 생각했다. 식당에 가서도 수퍼마켓에 가서도, 강의실에서도, 하다 못해 커피 한잔 마시려 해도 무에 그리 따지고 묻는 것이 많던지.. 영어도 서툴어 생각하다 보면 기다리는 사람의 짜증이 온 몸에 꽂힌다.
커피 한잔 마실 때도 묻는 것이 많다. 우선 뭘 먹겠냐고 묻는다 (사실은 뭘 도와 드릴까요 이렇게 묻는다). "카페 모카 주세요"라는 한마디로 끝이 나지 않는다. 주문을 했으니 돈을 내야지..부시럭 지갑을 꺼내려는 차에 다시 질문이 날아든다. 이번에는 발음도 알아듣기 어렵다. 십중팔구는 휩크림을 넣겠느냐 묻는 것이다. 귀찮을땐 "예스"가 최고다. 그런데 또 묻는다. 계피가루는 넣을거냐? 역시 "예스"다. 이쯤이면 끝날 법도 한데.. 또 묻는다. "What size, Mam?" (머가 그렇게 복잡하니..얼른 커피 좀 마시자꾸나..) "Yes!". 이번에는 톤을 한번 더 높여 같은 질문을 한다. 웁스! 순간적으로 yes를 원하는 대답이 아니었음을 직감한다. "Excuse me?" 되물으면 세번째 약간 천천히, 그러나 엄청 딱딱한 톤으로 다시 한번 얘기한다. 이쯤 되면 직원의 노여움을 푸는 최소한의 방법은 비싼 것을 먹는 거다. "그랑데, 플리즈"가 나올수 밖에 없다.
만약 미국 식당에서 음식을 주문할때 서버가 하는 말을 다 알아듣고 답할 수 있으며, 자신이 원하는 음식을 먹을 수 있다면 정말 대단한 수준이다. 적어도 영어와 그들이 추구하고자 하는 음식에서의 다양성을 이해했다는 말이니 말이다.
그런데 조금 지내다 보면 이런 불편함이 비단 영어의 문제가 아님을 알게 된다. 미국에서 느끼는 순간순간의 당혹감은 다양성을 존중하는 사고방식의 차이로부터 비롯된다는 생각을 많이 한다. 우리는 너무나 통일을 중시하는 (나라가 통일이 못되서 그런가?) 사고방식을 가지고 있다. 하다 못해 짬뽕과 짜장면에서 볶음밥으로만 '다양성'을 추구해도, 당장 서버의 꾸짖음을 듣지 않던가. "통일 시켜야 빨리 나온다"고. 만약 짬뽕 시키면서, "조금 덜 맵게 해주시고, 볶을때 야채 중에서 양파 빼주시고, 마늘을 반만 써주세요." 이렇게 주문하면 당장 주문받는 서버의 얼굴 빛이 달라질 것이다. 아마 성격 까칠하신 분은 "그렇게 주문하셔도 따로 못만들어 드려요. 어떻게 일일이 다 맞춰요."라고 그자리에서 자를지 모를 일이다.
어느덧 미국에서 4년을 살다 보니 다시 한국에 와서는 오히려 역으로 모든 것을 획일시하는, 그리고 모든 판단 기준이 흑백인 한국의 사고 방식이 낯설다. 그래도 스타벅스, 커피 빈등 커피 전문점의 급속한 확장 탓에 커피 기호 만은 많이 다양해 졌다. 심지어 인스턴트 커피믹스도 설탕/프림 양을 조절하게 한다던지, 연한 블랙 믹스가 있다던지 그렇게 바뀌지 않았는가.
