자고 깨면 새로운 단어들이 생겨나는 세상이다. 그 용어들을 모두 쫓아가기란 여간 부지런 떨어서 되는 일이 아니다. 신문 열심히 보는 것만으로는 부족하고, 이런 저런 포털 사이트와 유명 블로그 사이트들을 섭렵하지 않으면 안된다. 그래서 때론 포기하기도 하는데, '웹2.0'이라는 것은 도저히 포기가 되지 않는다.
이미 한차례 인터넷 혁명기를 겪은 우리로서는 그 엄청난 파도를 앞서서 맞는 것과 그렇지 못한 것의 차이도 너무나 잘 알고 있는지라, 새로운 변혁을 주도할 웹 2.0 이해하기는 인터넷 세상에서 살아남기에 버금가는 화두인 듯싶다.
문제는, 웹2.0을 시원하게 정의해주는 것을 찾기 어렵다는 점이다. 비슷한 주제의 강연을 들어 보아도, 잡지에 실린 긴 글을 읽어 보아도 웹2.0 시대가 열리고 있다는 예고만 요란할 뿐 실체를 명확하게 설명하지 못하는 경우가 많다.
웹 진화론은 그런 점에서 좀 더 체계적으로 접근을 한다. 인터넷이라는 거대한 흐름을 가능케한 요소들의 정리를 통해 인터넷의 변화 방향인 웹2.0 시대에 대한 설명을 전개하고 있다. 정보 처리나 저장의 비용을 끝없이 떨어뜨리는 치프 혁명이나 개방화된 구조가 인터넷이라는 인프라와 결합하면서 어떻게 또다른 엄청난 변화를 가져올 것인가에 대해 구체적인 실례를 들어 놓았다.
인상적이었던 것은, 언제나 변화의 흐름이 그렇지만, 이제까지의 고정관념을 바꾸고 있다는 점이다. 우리가 흔히 이해하고 있는 80대 20의 법칙에 의해 20%의 구성원이 전 사회 가치의 80%를 생산해낸다고 믿고 20%에 좀 더 역점을 두었던 것들도 웹2.0 시대에는 변화해 갈 것이다. 80%에 의해 만들어 지는, 개별적으로는 가치가 낮은 정보나 지식들이 훨씬 더 중요해지는 세상으로 변화한다는 이른 바 '롱테일의 법칙'은 정말 신선한 충격이었다. 얼마전 기사에서 구글이 소규모 인터넷 사이트나 혹은 블로거들을 대상으로 하는 에드센스 광고 프로그램을 통해 한 블로거가 매달 평균 1만6천달러 (약 1천5백만원)의 수입을 올린다는 기사가 그렇게 뇌리에 박힐수가 없었다.

인터넷 보급률로는 세계 수위를 다투고 인터넷 서비스나 애플리케이션의 성장이 빠른 우리나라에도 미래 트렌드를 꿰뚫는 식견으로 업계의 나아갈 방향을 제시해 줄 사람이 필요하지 않을까.. 이 책을 재미있게 읽고 난 후의 아쉬움은 이것 이었다.
